Once infected, treatment needs to be administered to the patient to help avoid some of the serious complications that have been linked to STDs. The treatment depends on the specific sexually transmitted infection and ranges from antibiotics to drugs that are only able to slow down the progression.
Several sexually transmitted infections pose a public health concern among people in Ghana. Among viral infections transmitted through sex, HPV, Hepatitis B, genital herpes, and HIV poses the greatest threats due to high prevalence. Gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis are bacterial infections also commonly found among the local population.
A major issue that Ghana is facing is the lack of testing for STDs among the general population. People in the area are at risk of experience serious, sometimes even life-threatening, complications when they are not aware of an STD that they had contracted.
In addition to the concern related to complications, there is also the risk of further aggravating the prevalence of these sexually transmitted infections. Infected people do not always have symptoms, but they can still cause the STD to transmit to another person through sexual activities.
