There are more than 300,000 adults and children in Ghana living with HIV. The majority of these patients are female, with only about 100,000 men estimated to be infected. In 2018, an estimated 14,000 people in Ghana passed away due to this sexually transmitted infection.
This is a serious disease that poses a risk to the global health system. It is spread through sexual intercourse and thousands of new cases are reported in Ghana annually.
One of the major problems with HIV is that early symptoms can often be mistaken for something else. This leads the patient to avoid being tested for the STD. In turn, the viral infection starts to spread in the body more rapidly. This causes CD4 cells to be killed – a specific type of T cell that plays an important role in the body’s immune system.
As CD4 cells are killed, the person becomes more prone to develop cancer, infection, and other illnesses.
This is why testing for HIV at a frequent interval is advised to everyone in Ghana who is sexually active. Some people do have a higher risk, such as those that do not use condoms. A person with more than one sex partner also increases their own risk of being infected with the virus.
