Candida albicans is a fungus that causes candidiasis- an overgrowth of the microorganism. It is an opportunistic pathogenic yeast. It is a normal flora of the human gut, and it does not thrive outside the human body. Candida albicans can be found in 40-60% of healthy adults. Vaginal yeast infection due to Candida albicans is particularly common in women of child-bearing age. The yeast normally resides on the skin or in the intestine from where it can spread to the vagina. Candidiasis infection is more likely to occur in women who:

  • Pregnant
  • Use IUD (intrauterine device)
  • Have diabetes
  • Have a weak immune system, example HIV infected patient
  • Wear tight undergarment that impede air circulation
  • Are taking antibiotics. Some bacteria that normally resides in the vagina keep yeast in check and prevent it from growing. Antibiotics taken by mouth tend to kill these bacteria thereby increasing the risk of developing a yeast infection.

Symptoms of vaginal yeast infection

  1. Itching or burning sensation may occur in the vagina and vulva especially during sexual intercourse
  2. The genital area may become red or swollen
  3. Thick, whitish discharge resembling cottage cheese often observed in women

Yeast infections become more serious a week before menstrual periods begins

If symptoms of vaginal infection are observed, a sample of vaginal discharge or fluid from the cervix could be tested for the microorganism that is responsible for the infection. Antifungal medication/vaginal creams and suppositories can be used to treat the infection, but it is prudent to get tested first and be sure you have the infection. This is to avoid the overuse of antifungals which can cause the chances of increasing yeast resistance.
